Understanding Medical Keywords

Medical keywords are the cornerstone of SEO for doctors. Before you do anything else related to medical SEO, you should determine what keywords you are going to optimize your site or page around.

To the novice, finding the right medical keywords may seem easy. If you want to write an article about asthma you simply use asthma and a few other words related to the condition and go from there, right? Not quite. There is more to keywords than just picking a couple of words that seem to be related to the medical website content you are writing.

Primary Keywords
The first thing you need to understand about medical keywords is what primary keywords are. Let’s look at our asthma example. Asthma is definitely a primary keyword because it is what the article is about. Likewise, a term like dyspnea would be a primary keyword as it is a symptom of an asthma attack. By now you may have made the assumption that the primary keywords are the medical keywords that your content is focused on. Usually you have anywhere from 3 to 5 primary keywords.

Secondary Keywords
If you have primary keywords, you have to have at the very least some secondary keywords. These are the medical keywords that serve as synonyms to you primary keywords and/or they provide a more detailed description of your primary medical keywords. For example, if we take the primary keyword dyspnea we can apply the secondary keywords of shortness of breath or breathlessness. You can also apply words like respiration, inhale, exhale, etc.
